Course Objectives 


At the completion of the course, participant will be able to

  • Understand the role of the Infection Preventionist in the long-term care setting

  • Set up an Infection Prevention & Control Program in a long-term care facility​ including the following components:

  • Surveillance

  • Investigation

  • Prevention

  • Control

  • Reporting

Who Should Attend This Course 


This course is a comprehensive training for Infection Preventionists (IPs) in Long-Term Care.  It meets the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) requirement for training of persons in that role.  The course is open to anyone interested in this training but is most helpful to Long-Term Care persons who are serving, or interested, in the following capacities:

  • The Role of the Infection Preventionist (IP) in Long-Term Care

  • Expertise and Knowledge Needed to be an Effective Infection Preventionist

  • Microbiology Essentials for the Infection Preventionist

  • Create a Comprehensive Surveillance Program in Long-Term Care

    • Surveillance Case Studies, Interactive Exercise, How to Use Surveillance Logs

  • Preventable Healthcare-Acquired Infections (HAIs)

  • Standard Precautions and Transmission-Based Isolation Precautions

  • Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs) and C. difficile

  • Hand Hygiene

  • The Infection Preventionist as Educator

  • Set up an Infection Prevention and Control Program in a long-term care facility​

 

Day 2

  • The Role of the Environment in the Transmission of Infections

    • Environmental Rounds Exercise

  • Common Infectious Diseases in Long-Term Care - or What's Bugging Your Facility

  • How to Describe Lesions

  • Infection Prevention for Employees

  • Outbreak Management

  • Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP)

  • Communication Tools and Techniques

  • Survey Survival Tips

  • Putting It All Together

    • Using Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Tools

In-Person Classroom Learning

Persons selecting this option will attend a live in-person class.  Attendance at this venue offers the participants an opportunity to interact directly with the course faculty.
